Governmental Liability

Our firm has comprehensive experience handling a broad range of civil rights claims including First Amendment freedom of speech litigation, police misconduct and challenges to the conditions of prison confinement. We have successfully defended state and local municipalities, government officials and correctional officers, as well as private entities and their employees who offer probation and medical services to the state.

We pride ourselves on the efficient resolution of civil rights litigation for both our defendant and plaintiff clients. We are effective at resolving the vast majority of our cases with dispositive motions in state and federal courts. We also serve many out-of-state clients including, but not limited to those in California, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Experience in this practice area includes:

  • Defending the State Bar of Georgia in a First Amendment commercial speech case brought by two attorneys who were sanctioned for violating Georgia Bar rules through their means of soliciting clients and advertising.
  • Obtaining a $9 million jury verdict for private citizens against the former county sheriff who was found liable for defamation and for violating the individuals' First Amendment rights to free speech.
  • Defending county departments of correction and local jails from prisoner lawsuits in 27 states.
